Trinity Lutheran Church is the oldest Lutheran Church in Alton, founded by 5 charter members in 1902 as a member congregation of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.
From that early beginning, the congregation steadily grew. In 1938, a new church was built at the current location of Blair and Maple Streets. The educational wing of the building was added in 1952.
In 1963 Trinity was fortunate to begin receiving new members from near-by Berea Lutheran Church. Berea had been founded in 1947 as a local African-American Missouri Synod congregation. Berea Lutheran concluded its mission in the neighborhood in the mid-1960s. Since then Trinity has been a multicultural congregation.
In 1975 Trinity Lutheran voted to leave the Missouri Synod. It remained an independent Lutheran congregation until it joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1989.
Today, Trinity Lutheran in Alton celebrates the gift of having experienced the Gospel Truth that in Christ there is no longer Jew, nor Greek, neither male nor female, neither rich nor poor, slave nor free, black nor white or any other divide, but that all of us become "one," one family, one community, united by and sharing the Love of God through Jesus the Christ. We claim, as core to our Christian mission in our neighborhood of Alton and the region all around, the witness to Christ's inclusive love, which negates our society's prejudicial boundaries. We celebrate our mix of cultures as testament to our belief that God sent his son, Jesus Christ, to be savior to all people.
As Christ welcomes all into his kingdom, in his name we welcome all people into our congregation.
